Abbie's love of exploring opened her heart to reading. Books, she found, were a good way to visit places previously inaccessible. Through reading, she experienced adventures impossible before that opened her mind to new people, settings, beliefs and ways of living. Abbie's sense of discovery and curiosity made reading so easy and enjoyable. Living experiences through books is perhaps the greatest benefit of reading- correcting an ignorant mind while never leaving a living room. But in contrast, much like virtual reality or video games, reading can discourage the pursuit of personal experiences. Once Abbie discovered this, reading became difficult because she was afraid she was living her life through others. But she overcame this injury, realizing that reading adventures can offer inspiration, and ever since she has sought out life's adventures, writing her own story as she went. Now, when delving into a book, Abbie views it as a taste test, an example of what could be. Even if the story is fiction, lessons can still be learned from the characters, their trials and their successes. An amazing reading skill Abbie is currently working on is empathizing with characters- taking their lessons and learning from their mistakes, then applying these concepts in real life. Many readers around the world take advantage of this valuable talent. It is because of this that Abbie tries to choose books that she can relate with easily, while still occasionally reading diverse stories to keep perspective. Most importantly, she chooses books that she enjoys, because she believes enjoyment is one of the core purposes of reading. Anyone can become a good reader if they read books they enjoy. Currently, Abbie is reading and studying a book she very much enjoys- The Book of Mormon. Although she has around 400 books in her house, she only got around to reading 8 or so books last year and about 5 this summer. She especially enjoys books by Brandon Mull, Sarah Dessen and Jane Austen.
Abbie is very good at expressing her thoughts through writing, maybe even better than speaking. Abbie shares many of the same reasons others write- to express themselves, for fun and for work. Particularly, she learned to write and got good at it because she enjoyed the feeling of satisfaction after working hard writing journal entries, essays and and critiques. She loves the feeling of being able to eloquently express herself and properly articulate her ideas through writing. Because of this, she mostly likes to write persuasive essays or argumentative pieces. She chooses writing ideas that she is passionate about, and it is usually easier for her to write about those topics. However, she enjoys the challenge of writing about topics that she is (previously) disinterested in or uneducated on. Because she usually writes about passionate topics, and focuses solely on getting her ideas down, so sometimes sentence flow can be a bit difficult. Having good sentence flow is a very valuable skill for writers, so she is constantly trying to improve hers. Honest critiques on her writing skills benefit her most.
